Knight_Ranger Comics: Superman #681 (New Krypton)

Written by: James Robinson
Penciled by: Renato Guedes

The second part (or third if you count Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen special) of the long awaited New Krypton event. Following up on the events of Geoff Johns’ masterful Brainiac arc from Action Comics, the city of Kandor has been resurrected in Antarctica and now 100,000 super-powered kryptonians are roaming the Earth. Superman has taken it upon himself to introduce the inhabitants of Earth to their new neighbors and to acclimate his brethren to their new home. Always the optimist, Superman believes the two races can coexist peacefully and that Earth will be better for it.

Knight_Ranger Comics: Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns

Written by: Geoff Johns
Art by: Shane Davis and Sandra Hope

After 7 issues of Secret origins, Geoff Johns’ brings the Green Lantern back into current continuity with Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns. This comic has two things in common with Johns’ other Final Crisis tie-in Legion of Three Worlds: it is fantastic and it has nothing to do with Final Crisis. Other than the editors note on the first page letting us know that events of this comic take place between Final Crisis #1 and #2, there is no mention of Darkseid, the Anti-Life Equation or any other plot thread from Grant Morrison’s story. Is that a good thing or bad thing? Well, it all depends on your opinion of Final Crisis. Regardless, FC: Rage of the Red Lanterns is a solid kick off to the upcoming Green Lantern arc The Blackest Night.

Ed's Shipping List Comics: Monarch Cards & Comics Shipping List 11/12/08

Greetings and Salutations, Rockin’ Comic Fans!
Welcome to yet another pulse-pounding episode of the Monarch Cards & Comics Shipping List! I keep thinking that I have to come up with a snappier name for this little newsletter. If anyone has any bright ideas on cool titles then by all means let me know. I’m looking for something tasteful, but exciting…descriptive, but not dry. I’m sure someone out there who reads this must be more creative then I.

Ed's Shipping List Comics: Monarch Cards & Comics Shipping List 10/29/08

Hola, Wacky Comic Fans!

I’d love to write a little bit about the books shipping next week, but I can’t because at the time of this writing I haven’t actually created the list yet. When I decided to do this weekly shipping list I didn’t for a moment consider what was going to happen whenever I took a Friday off. As it so happens, by the time you read this little love note I will be out on the golf course cursing like a sailor and consistently hitting the ball onto the wrong fairway. But never despair, my friends, because I managed to come up with some conversation stuff that has nothing at all to do with next week’s books.

Construction Updates Pic Pics of New Stark Trek Movie Leaked

May seems an awfully long way off but Paramount decided this week to start letting some information out about the new Star Trek movie. First off I must let everyone know that according to the grapevine there will be the first FULL trailer for J.J. Abrams' re-envisioned Star Trek shown with Quantuum of Solace on November 14. If I wasn’t going to see it already I would be going now. Imagine if they put it with something like Hannah Montana, I would shell out 10 clams to get in just to see the trailer.

JSA Jim Comics: JSA Jim’s DCU #003

At a suggestion from a member of my veritable legion of fans I thought we’d talk about Hawkman this time around.

Basically, DC is once again going in more than one direction with the character. There’s a definite schizophrenia in play with the Winged Wonder and if it’s not on purpose, if its not part of a bigger game plan, it’s a bit disheartening.

Ed's Shipping List Comics: Monarch Cards & Comics Shipping List 10/1/08

Well, thanks to the upcoming five week month we all get a little break on our pocket books next week. Only 40 new comic titles are shipping next Wednesday (along with a whopping 18 tradepaperbacks/hardcovers, but that's another issue entirely), so some of you will actually get to buy other things besides comics, like food and gas. Thank Odin that I get paid this week so that the sudden drop in rampant comic commercialism doesn't affect my check...:)

JSA Jim Comics: JSA Jim’s DCU #002

Welcome back to my little corner of the DCU. Hold tight ‘cause things are about to get BIG, Binky.

I want to say that FINAL CRISIS is sweeping the DC Universe but if you read last month’s column you know that I’m not really feelin’ it that sweeping motion. That pretty much continues this month though the FC event has gotten bigger and for the most part better – at least the spinoffs have.

Peacekeeper News: The Star Trek Experience

The first time I set foot on the Promenade (modeled after Deep Space Nine’s) I was in love. As I walked down the steps I looked to Quark’s Bar on my right and to the shops to my left, I knew that I wanted to come back again and again. Which I did; I returned 2 more times and with each visit more wonderful memories. In my heart I was really there on DS9. The station on the show is situated between Bajor and a near by Wormhole but in reality I was at the in Las Vegas Hilton. Don’t get me wrong the Hilton is a swell place but I really wanted it to be the 24th century. I never did get to see Bajor and now I, we, are losing the only Star Trek themed attraction on Earth. On September 1st the Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton closed its doors to humans and aliens alike.

Cyber Nerd Games/RPG: Quick Fix: Adding Aspects to D&D

My group is still working on getting together to try out D&D 4E. (Attacking two quick build characters with five Kobalds on a chess board doesn't count, does it?) And since we haven't played yet, I'm withholding judgment on the system, but I must admit that I'm very excited about the new game. There is one house rule that I'm considering implementing. Anyone who's played Spirit of the Century or any other FATE game will tell you about the awesomeness of SotC's supermechanic: Aspects.

So hopefully I’m not the only GM out there who has been enjoying a new novel, graphic novel, comic book, or what have you and has thought to myself, “I hope my players never read this, ‘cause I’m gonna ‘homage’ this chapter next session!” Anyone else? Yes? No? Well, I’m going to take your silence as an affirmative and plow onward with Recommended Reading!
